Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnosis like?
You may think that you have never been hypnotised before, but have you ever caught yourself daydreaming at work or completely lost in a book? Well, this kind of focused attention is a naturally occurring form of hypnosis. The only difference between that and clinical hypnosis is that with the latter you have chosen to be hypnotised.
Is it true that when you are hypnotised it is like being asleep?
This is not true however you are usually generally relaxed (although this is not always the case and is just a lovely ‘side-effect’ of hypnosis) but you are fully aware of your surroundings, and what is being said to you.
When i'm hypnotised will you be in control of me?
When in hypnosis you always remain in complete control, as it is you who is ‘doing’ the hypnosis, I’m facilitating the hypnosis. When hypnotised, you will reject any suggestions given if they conflict with your values or beliefs. Similarly, you will not say anything in hypnosis that you would not normally want to reveal.
So you won’t be doing chicken impressions – unless you want to of course!
What if I cannot be hypnotised?
Being hypnotised is similar to having a daydream. If you can daydream than you can be hypnotised. There is a small element of the population who can’t be hypnotised; however, hypnosis is a skill that can be learned. What I need is for you to trust in me; have confidence in yourself and in the hypnotic process; have a positive attitude to hypnosis; be motivated to achieve your goals; have realistic expectations; and be aware that this is a collaborative ‘team effort’ between us.
Can you get trapped in hypnosis?
You are able to come out of hypnosis at any time you like should you so wish. If there is an emergency, you will be fully able to exit hypnosis unaided and deal with the situation at hand. You are able to open your eyes whenever you want to. No-one has ever been ‘trapped’ in hypnosis.
Should I be nervous about being hypnotised?
It is normal to be nervous about doing and experiencing something for the first time. You may also be feeling apprehensive as someone may have made fun of you for turning to a hypnotherapist. However, what they think doesn’t matter but what you think does matter. If you have any questions or worries, I will be able to reassure you.
How do you work?
Whilst I need to have some history of the matter we are dealing with; I do not feel the need to rake over old issues in much detail. Rather I focus on what is happening now, how we can help you deal with that, and get you to where you want to be. Before the free consultation and first session I ask you to complete and return a questionnaire. This saves time at the first appointment and allows me to prepare and plan for the session. It is important for you to know that we work collaboratively as a team. As a hypnotherapist I facilitate the change you desire. I will expect you to undertake any therapeutic tasks, such as listening to recordings or completing a diary, to complement the work we do together.
How long will the process take?
Each client is as individual as each case and the time it takes can be down to you. I can’t guarantee and put a definitive time frame on any treatment. We have a free consultation of 20 minutes. From this I prepare a treatment plan that is tailor-made for your individual needs. On average, people can take 4 sessions. Some people may require more sessions than others however, having said that, most issues can be dealt with within 4-6 sessions. Each session lasts 1-1.5hrs.
